EARLY HISTORY OF THE FAMILY, MUDHOL

EARLY HISTORY OF THE FAMILY, MUDHOL

LAXMANSINHA, the 128th in the Solar line, from Shri Ramchandra, ascended the throne in V.S.1331 (H.675). It is needless to say that the times of Laxmansinha were critical and full of sudden turns of fortune for the Rajput Kings. Emperor Allaudin Khilji attacked Chittor or twice in a short space of time, and eventually reduced the fort, which had been kept free from the unholy touch of the Muhammedans. During these sieges, Laxmansinha lost eleven of his sons one after the other. Ajaysinha, who was the pet of his father, was sent with a select retinue, outside the fort, and was asked by his father to live in the Western province of Kilawada.

At the time of his departure, Laxmansinha had given eSujansinhaxpression to his last wish that after him Hamir, the son of Arisinha, the elder brother of Ajayasinha, should be seated on the throne. Ajayasinha, after reaching the province of Kilawada, ruled there for a time.  During this interval he had to fight many petty and big potentates in the hill tracts near about Kilawada. Munj was the most powerful of the lot. While fighting him, Ajayasinha had a hand to hand fight with Munj. Munj fled away but not before dealing a heavy thrust with his spear on the head of Ajayasinha. Ajayasinha returned to his capital and sent to avenge his wound his young sons Sujansinha and Ajabsinha, though they were young lads of ten or eleven. They were not able to accomplish the deed and so Ajayasinha sent for his nephew Rana Hamir, who undertook the deed and took a vow not to return without the head of the enemy Munj. Shortly afterwards he returned tying to his saddle the head of enemy. He placed it at the feet of his uncle and humbly asked him to say whether it was the head of his enemy. Rana Ajayasinha warmly embraced his nephew and said, "My child, it is written by your auspicious state that on your shoulder should rest the responsibility of this nation."  He took the blood from the head of Munj and made a mark with it on the head of Hamir.
